1 – 4.30 pm : 5 / 6 & 12 / 13 January 2019 at the Discovery Coast Sport and Rec, Anderson Way, Agnes Water.

Held over 2 consecutive weekends, participants will learn how to hand build, make glazes, glaze and wood fire Raku Pottery. Raku is a spectacular pottery technique lending itself to artistic creations, rather than functional ware.

This multi day workshop will introduce you to the exciting and dynamic process of Raku Firing with experienced artist Tobias De Maine.

 

Raku firings have their origins in Japan, where they are used to produce bowls for the tea ceremony. Raku firings have evolved with contemporary ceramics and different approaches have developed. Rapid firing in conjunction with post firing reduction is used to produce spectacular and decorative results.

 

The aim of this workshop is to enable attendees to understand and start to be comfortable with the entire process of raku pottery.

 

All materials supplied including Tea & Coffee.

 

 

Topics covered in this workshop: 

  • Hand building to withstand the shock cooling of the Raku firing Technique
  • Glazes discussed with hands on glaze making, including crackle glazes, coloured glazes, metallics  and Naked Raku processes demonstrated and used.
  • Glazing and decorating options demonstrated and used by participants.
  • Kiln equipment requirements discussed and demonstrated.
  • Firing procedures and post firing reduction demonstrated. Most of the firing will be done for participants.

 

This workshop is conducted partly outdoors, sensible non-synthetic clothes and closed footware are a must.
